Indian Premier League... good or bad?
Hi friends in this article let us discuss about the famous sport in India and that too about the Indian Premier League, famously known as IPL. We are not going to discuss from game point of view, rather we will see about the some of the pros and cons of the IPL. Truly, everyone will accept the fact that the idea of IPL came out, only after the emergence of Indian Cricket League (ICL).Indeed cricket has taken a new dimension and if the number of participants increases then sure it can be the number 1 sport in this world. But still, it is very difficult and lot of efforts must be made so that many nations participate in the international cricket tournament. Surely IPL is a fantastic way, which really pulls the attraction and makes people to watch cricket. Now ICC must use the T20 format as a great tool and should show the world that Cricket is a fast and much more entertaining and thrilling game than that of football.
It was in 2008, the inaugural tournament of IPL was held and it was a smash hit, and really the organizers were taken by surprise to see the loyalty among the fans for their franchise. But unfortunately due to election, the IPL was conducted din South Africa, where there were huge cricket fans and also has a large number of Indian population. Within a short period they managed to organize in another country and this has made the IPL chairman famous and also he was interviewed by the students of top MBA college sin the world. This was an unexpected success, because they thought they could never get such a huge reception for IPL in South Africa and on the other hand the Government of South Africa was also benefited and it was such a great boost for them, because they are the host nation of the 2010 football world cup and it showed the world that they were capable of conducting any tournament effectively.
With a couple new teams expected in 2011, IPL is really proving to be a great tournament and most importantly a huge business. I remember, once Lalit Modi said that one day a match will be played between Mumbai and New York and that is the goal for him, as he wants to take the game to the global level, like football. It is a difficult job, but they believe they can make it and the reason for this is, China and USA are really interested in participating in the game. With another powerful nation, India, already well versed in the game, the inclusion of China and USA, will really make Cricket as a global event. China has a long term goal and they are very determined in finding a spot in 2019 cricket world cup and also obtaining the test status by 2020.
Well, if you want to watch China playing cricket at an international level, then you need not wait for a long time, because you can watch them participating and also competing against countries like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh in the T 20 format, in the Asian games, which will take place in 2010 in China. China is the host nation of the 2010 Asian games and with the inclusion of cricket (T 20 format), China automatically qualifies to participate in the game as they re the host nation. It is expected that 8 teams, including China, will participate in the event.
Lali Modi also managed to introduce the Champions League format, like that of football, which includes all the top T 20 teams from cricket playing nations. The inaugural season took place in India in 2009 and New South Waves Blues from Australia won the tournament. But the fans support was not very high when compared to that of IPL. With any new alterations in the Champion League format, by playing matches in different nations, and also when China develops and starts playing cricket, we can also expect a match taking place between Chennai and Beijing, taking place at New York. I guess you might feel this is asking for too much. Even I can understand but if it happens it will be great boost form the game.
Practically speaking introduction of IPL has lot of advantage and the important one is, taking the game to the global level. But on the other side, the format which really gets affected is the 50 over game. When we consider any ODI playedin India between two nations we can expect full house, because our country plays, but at the same time when it comes to the World cup, theT 20 world cup has really out thrown the ODI world cup, because people come and watch the T 20 game, irrespective of the nation splaying, because this is a great entertainment. So it is true that the 50 over game is in danger and ICC should take care and also make some changes to make this very interesting.
When comes to cricket, test match is always the best format and this is the place where people are really tested. You need to apply your strokes and this is a great test of character for the players. In the case of T20, we rarely see perfect cricketing strokes, as batsman will go for a kill and come with different creative shorts. So let’s hope that the introduction of IPL never affects other format of the game.
