Charlie Chaplin , whose real name Charles Spencer Chaplin (* 16 April 1889 , London - † 25 December 1977 , Corsier-sur-Vevey in Laussanne , Switzerland ) was a British film actor, director and producer. His last wife, Oona O'Neill was the daughter of playwright Eugene O'Neill , comes from the marriage of his daughter, actress Geraldine Chaplin .

He was born in London but became famous in Hollywood . The acting got longer than 8-year-old, when he worked as a stage performer. In 1906 he began working in touring theater. His first silent film appeared in 1914 and three years later he was already the highest paid actor in the world. In 1919 he founded the company United Artists . After the war of opinion broke with Hollywood . For its "un-American activities" after his stay abroad not allowed to return back to the U.S. , so he settled in Switzerland. Back in the States he allowed until 1972 , when he received an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement. He belonged to the world's most famous filmmakers.
