Usefulness of plants and animals
Plants and animals provide us with many things which we need in our daily life.
Poultry animals like hen and duck are given special food.
Food that animals eat also comes from plants. Animals are dependent on plants directly or indirectly for their food.
Besides giving us food plants are useful to us in many other ways.
Plants give us wood and food.
Uses from the Wood
Doors, windows, desks, chairs, pencil, etc., are all made of wood. Cricket bat, hockey stick, matchboxes and toys are all made of wood.
Food from the trees
Plants like paddy, wheat and maize produce grains. These grains are cereals. Peas, beans and the various types of Dals are called pulses. Pulses are obtained from plants. Peanut oil, sunflower oil, mustard oil is called vegetable oils. We get vegetable oils from the seeds of these plants. Castor oil uses for engine oil. Animals like cows, goats, sheep and buffaloes eat grass and fodder.
Other uses of plants
· Plants give us beautiful flowers which make our lives colorful
· We get delicious fruits from plans.
· Plants give us wood and provide us with shade
· It gives shelter to various birds and animals
· It gives fresh air
· Plants give us medicines
a) Medicines obtained from different plant-parts are used to cure diseases. This system of Indian medicine is called AYURVEDA.
b) CHARAK and DHANWANTARI were famous ayurvedas of ancient India.
c) Tulasi leaves are added into tea to get rid of cold and cough.
d) Banafsa leaves are also used for the treatment of cold and cough.
e) When a person suffering from chicken pox is discharged from hospital, he is given a bath of Margo leaves. Neem is used as a medicine for skin diseases.
f) Cotton obtained from plants is used for making cloth
g) We get perfumes and scent from flowers. Bees collect nectar from flowers and make honey.
h) We get gum and resins from plants

j) Plant wastes make good manure. It is called compost.
· Elephants carry logs of wood from one place to another
· Camels pull carriages in sandy areas
· Donkeys and mules carry loads on rocky mountains
· Bullock plough fields
· Animals give us milk, leather, meat, eggs, wool and many other things
a) Cows give us milk from which we get curd, cheese, cream and butter.
b) Dicks and hens give us eggs and meat
c) Sheep and yak give us wool
d) Silkworms produce silk
e) Skin of dead animals like cows and buffaloes are cured to give us leather
f) Animal dung, bones of dead animals make good manure
