Medical Transcription, which is essentially transcribing medical dictations, is one of the booming careers in today’s healthcare industry. Despite the recession during the past several months, the Medical Transcription, as part of the health care domain, is growing at a tremendous pace and is being recognised as a good career option.

What is MT?

Medical Transcription, or MT for short, is the process which involves conversion of voice or audio files into written ones. The medical records, dictated by the physicians, mainly from the US and UK, for their patients are recorded in a voice format, and these audio files are then transcribed via the computer.

The person who does medical transcription (or the transcription of  voice files related to medicine) is referred to as a Medical Transcriptionist, and is given thorough training in the medical terminology, basic IT skills, and various accents, especially, the American accent. He/She needs to be very accurate in typing the dictations, besides maintaining the speed. The dictations can involve any or all of the procedures happening in the hospital- from a general examination to a major operation.

Medical Transcription is in great demand in India, especially in the metropolitan cities, and is therefore a lucrative career option. At the entry level , the pay of a medical transcriptionist is generally in the range of Rs.6000-Rs 7000 per month. In case of experienced transcriptionists, who can be promoted as proof readers and editors, the payment can go up to Rs. 25000 per month.
