Bisibelebath is a dish made of rice and dhal and is speciality of the state of Karnataka.It provides a wonderful breakfast item as it both heavy and can be prepared in less time.

 

The term Bisi-bele-bath translates to “hot lentil rice item”. As the name indicates, it is generally served hot. The recipe for this tasty and mouth-watering dish is as follows:

 

Ingredients:

 

-Rice: 1/2 kilo (not Basmati)

-Toor dhal: 1/4 kg

-Carrots and bean pieces: ½ cup

-Cauliflower florets and green peas (optional)

-Turmeric: a little

-Masala powder: 1-2 tsp

-Curry leaves and cashew nuts: a few

-Grated Coconut: 1 tbsp

-Tamarind: A  small ball.

-Chillies, Mustard powder, Channa Dhal: for seasoning.

 

Preperation:

 

1.  Pressure cook the rice and toor dhal separately with water, but make sure that they are not overcooked. Take them out and mix both in a vessel.

 

2.  Extract juice from tamarind and keep aside.

 

3.  Cook the cut vegetables with sufficient water.

 

4.  Heat a little oil separately and prepare seasoning by adding chillies, mustard powder, channa dhal, and curry leaves.

 

5.  Add the seasoning to the rice-dhal mixture. Also add the cooked vegetables, tamarind extract, salt, a little turmeric and masala powder. Sprinkle the grated coconut and mix.

 

6.  Cook the cashew nuts separately in a little ghee and add them to the Bisibelebath.

 

7.  Serve  hot. It is usually garnished with a handful of Khara Boondi for added taste.

Nutritive value of Bisibelebath:

 

→ Rice provides a good amount of carbohydrates while the dhal gives the required protein to the body.

 

→ The Carrots are a good source of Vitamin A and provides protection against cancer. Even tamarind has a good amount of antioxidants which help in fighting cancer and lowering cholesterol.

 

→ Beans are rich in fibre and a great source of nutrients. As they belong to the legumes category, they are also rich in proteins.
