want someone's help to restore my desktop

just 1 and half hours ago, power went off and my system was not shut down that time.
when power came later, I had some booting problems. somehow I managed to restart the system. But many icons on the desk top have disappeared, even my computer, my documents and many documents on desk top. I lost all saved pictures inside my pictures as well. Also, mozilla bookmarks. :( :( . My LED monitor has also reduced its width to normal width (lost its stretching character). What happened actually?
Most sad part is that I lost a MS-Word article that I was preparing.......i was saving in desktop.......my whole day's work lost. Can someone help me to restore previous desktop?

    Go to 'repairs and maintenance' You may find 'system restore' there. But the setting in computers differ. Just try to search the option of 'system restore'.

    You can find it in all programs> system tools> backup and restore also but I have my doubts if you will find your lost article but you can find it in MSWord if you did save it during typing. The option to recover is there in MS word itself. ind it out.

    But sir.. As per my understanding.. Such cases never delete documents and stuff. It only impacts installed software only. Even restore process can take system back to old stage but it can't recover docs..
    You need to install recovery software to get the docs back else i don't see a way..
    Life is a box of Chocolate, You never know what you gonna get.... :)

    it's surprising....it seems mS-Word itself is re-installed. many words that i have added to dictionary are now showing red lines....

    What happened happened. I suggest two ways. One is to store your data in CDs or pen drive. The second is to store your file in 'Google Doc' (now called google Drive). The data in Google drive cannot be lost. It also helps you to work from different computers. I am writing my articles in 'Google Docs' . I can continue writing from office computer, home computer and also from cyber cafe.
