So the question is typical but I think I can try to answer it.

If a computer has a virus it may start malfunctioning, like, it will not start. If we open a folder the same name appears with an exe [eg:- If i have a folder name -- Data, the virus will make a file called data.exe that too hidden.]

The virus doesn't allow to detect by antivirus and hence comparatively slows our computer.

For its safety always use a excellent antivirus and update it regularly.

Your computer might be at risk if you observe the annoying popup, which will just appear once per day, it has weaker protection than validated antivirus software.

3 things to do:
*Install anti-virus software (AVG, Norton, Mc Afee etc..)or update your current software;
*Install a firewall;
*Update your version of Windows.

Well, there are certain things from which you can say if there is virus in your computer or not.

If your system is working slower than the normal then it can contain virus.

If your Internet speed has been decreased then also it can happen due to virus.

If some of functions are unavailable from your operating system then it also mean you having virus on your system.

If you not having any problem in your computer, even then you can have virus on it, just use antivirus and scan it, it no virus found, you are safe ;)

The first sign that there is a virus is that the computer becomes slower and begins to hang and switch off automatically and switch on again as Sasikanth pointed out.Later you see some files getting corrupted and also zig zags on the screen appearing as you are browsing..

Sumit,

In general different virus attack different parts and your Pc but quiet often some common problem faced are :

The improper operation of programs or slow performance of programs, unusual behaviour like shutting down without your intervention and exisiting of some .exe files not created by you etc..Other than this some viruses also stop your anti-virus software to work properly...or some important program which are needed to operate your system...

So both hardware and softwares can be effected so if you suspect any unusual beheaviour it is better to scan with anti-virus software which is updated regularly..

Hope this information helps you.
