What exactly does character of a person mean?

The funny thing is the word "Character" seems to be something that holds a lot of importance to only the womenfolk of our society. The other day one of neighbor was complaining to me about my maid who according to her was characterless. The maid being a widow and now married to an already married man. But, . What about the man ? I feel that it is another typical double standard of our society where people mind others business more than their own..

That is a very nice question and one which needs a lot of brainstorming. And definitely not to leave the heart behind. The character of a man is how we perceive him in what situation. In general day to day life being a man of character or woman of character has been confined to sexual morality that has been portrayed by the society - living with one partner, not cheating on your partner, not flirting around or using loose remarks against opposite sex etc. "Character" has been narrowed down to that.

But for me character is vast and in it's entirety includes everything that makes you a good human and it is irrespective of gender. A widow seeking comfort and support and entering into second marriage is not characterless if she has not lured or bargained the man into a forced relationship. It is a high demand in our society to accept people as adult and respect their choice of life even if it is in contrast to our choice. As long as it does not affect the harmony of society, it should not be questioned.

If we look into History, Adolf Hitler was loyal to his wife. But was he a man of character?? Einstein had multiple relations with various ladies but still he had immense contribution to the mankind.

An alcoholic damages his health but can be kind and generous to society. A person who fits in to conventional picture of strong character- disciplined, religious...etc.etc. might not hesitate to compromise with ethics for his hunger for power and money.

Evaluating a character needs a wider lens. Even Lord Ram's character as a husband can be questioned as he abandoned his innocent wife just for some blame made by an unknown dhobi. He despite of being a man of strong character failed as a husband. On the contrary, Ravana despite of being an evil does scores a few plus point for being a gentleman who respected Sita's modesty and did not touch her.

I agree with you... Though society comprises of both sexes, it shows affinity towards men's deeds declaring as bravery. But it may not go well with the same community if same thing is done by a woman. If she do something which others don't dare to do, she will be blamed as 'notorious'. Double standard and so true! As we ladies too are a part of society (almost 50% of whole population), we too play a significant role in setting certain norms in the society. So sad, most of those set rules and beliefs are in favour of man.

It's nothing wrong for a widow to accept a new person in her life, as long as she has not shattered any family. Same is applicable to men folk too, I truly believe so. I firmly believe in the principle of loyalty towards partner.

I think some kind of effort should be taken from woman side as well, to take those precious time of gossips about her neighbour women and society, and use that time to think wisely in favour of her own sex communities of the society.

Character in our society at least has been wrongly linked to sexuality and not with morality and ethics. A person who is very loyal to his wife and behaves respectfully to women might be corrupt and would not even think twice about killing someone for money, but he is looked at at a person with good character. How silly! While women who may toil and strive hard to keep food on the table, fight with adversities against all odds but she is considered good only if she is loyal to her husband who could be a drunkard and a parasite who leeches off of his wife's earnings. Then she is considered as being of good character and a sati-savitri. It is a very outdated concept and it is high time now that character be linked with morality, ethics, and humanitarian values rather than on sexuality of a person./

Talking about character is a very tough task. People judge others only on the face value but to evaluate someone it is necessary to understand the people in depth. Blaming a woman is the easiest task in our society. The call girls are always criticized but the men who on regular basis visit them are known as gentlemen. No one wants to know the story behind the making of a call girl but everyone forgets that no girl is by birth a call girl. Some may forsake the purity of their character only to maintain their family and in this regard I would love to pay my regards to such women who sacrifice their own selves for the betterment of their own family. We pay more importance to the body factor than the purity of heart and mind. Thus, just having multiple relationship cannot label a woman characterless and if so then the men should also be termed the same.

In every situation , be it a broken marriage or a second marriage or even in a case of rape, it is the woman's so called character that is questioned. It is because our society is still very backward in its thinking and cannot think beyond what has been in practice a hundred years ago.

Generally, It's an old habit with some people. Raising a finger towards others is the easiest thing. Such people who point out towards other peoples faults must know that three more fingers are showing towards them Instead of Minding their own business some people find more pleasure in minding others business.

Character of a person would be his behavior, mannerisms, actions and reactions that help identify him. Based on this, we often judge a person to be good or bad.Unless the actions of one does not affect the lives of another, it can be acceptable.
