Can he be regarded an Indian?

Hundreds of students are being graduated in different professional courses every year. A few students study on their own money while for the students who earn a seat through entrance exams, definitely central government or state government spends the lion share of their expenses. Obviously those candidates are the most brilliant citizens of India, who can play a significant role in the development of our country.

But the most sad part is that, instead of serving their own motherland they fly abroad to serve some another country and earn in dollars. According to me, they are selling their own self esteem though they earn many fold than an Indian do. Does such brilliant students eligible to be named under 'proud Indians'?

Just because most such students settle abroad and make brilliant careers does not mean they are any less patriotic than us or are traitors. The fact we have to question is why do they go out at all?? If they had the same challenging jobs that would make use of their talents and brains HERE and in return give them the quality of life that they expect or deserve, then they would not have to go out anywhere at all.

Also, if we leave the part about patriotism aside, the phenomenon of brain drain to a larger extent is also necessary because it helps happen exchange of knowledge and ideas between countries. Many professionals prefer to work abroad for 10-20 years or so and then come back to India and bring with them lot of new ideas and values.

More importantly, we need the foreign currency to be injected into our economic system as much as any other country needs it. They have accounts in our banks and regularly send money to their own folks, invest money in projects here etc. In fact many NRIs are the ones who give much-needed hefty donations to their own schools and colleges which many patriotic Indians are not really seen doing. Those 'patriotic Indians' give more money to Sai Baba or Shirdi or to Tirupati Balaji! So we must not question their love for the country just because they choose to work abroad!

Sandhya Rani Many points you quoted are absolutely right. Last week, one devotee of Krishna dedicated ...i think 5kg gold to Guruvayur temple, when a kid was born to him. May be he got a child with Krishna's blessings. But it doesn't make sense that if we give more, God will also return the same. Is it a barter system or a give and take policy? I always feel that even if we give 1 rupee coin in temple with much dedication and belief in god, it's more than enough. More important is if we do with our heart or not. - Sandhya Rani - 10 years ago
usha manohar Thats an excellent analysis Kalyani ! I notice that many Indians tend to become judgmental and harsh while talking about youngsters working abroad. When it comes to their own kids they look the other way, a typical double standard that can be seen among Indians. The world should be vuewed as one open place where you have the freedom to move and settle where you like and when you restrict yourself and your mind to age old ideas there will hardly be any growth which is what happens with most Indian minds ! Need I say more ? - usha manohar - 10 years ago
Kalyani Nandurkar Yes Usha, most people who talk breathlessly about patriotism and serving the nation etc. are the ones who are trying to get their children admitted to an American university for higher studies. As far as I am concerned, patriotism is not related to where you work or where you live but in doing what you do to uphold your country's pride and prestige! And when technology has advanced so much, newer avenues have opened up for youngsters, newer experiences and places that beckon, it is not right to hold them in one place in the name of patriotism. I for one thing, am not ashamed to say that if my son wants to become an artist, we will try our best to send him either to Russia or China to get proper art education and if he chooses to settle in another country, we won't question it!n Because we know an artist is more respected and valued in other countries than in India! - Kalyani Nandurkar - 10 years ago

It is first of all an individual choice to stay back and work in India or to go to abroad. Also, the money that if offered in terms of salary in abroad is way higher, obviously patriotic or not, people think about themselves and their families first rather than thinking about their country. Also, we should not label them as less patriotic just because they choose to settle abroad. But later some of these talented people come back and contribute to India in very many ways.

No. When one fails to serve his own country, how can one be called as a 'Proud Indian'? See C.N.R Rao, , this year's coveted Bharat Ratna awardee. He left a lucrative career and returned back to India from America to serve his country that gave him life of fame and fortune. In fact, this was the fact taken in to consideration for conferring the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award.
There are several noble people who sacrificed for the welfare and betterment of their Mother nation.
Such people are worth of of being termed as 'Proud Indians".

It is left to the individual to decide what is best for him or her.If a country is capable of giving him or her what he deserves , he or she would definitely stick on or else move on ...It does not in anyway reflect a person's patriotism . In fact NRIs are doing as much as Indians to promote their country and are aware of everything that goes on here. .They have bank accounts here and send foreign cyrrency which helps the economy of the country. People go to gulf countries in large numbers because of their economic difficulties and to say they are not Indians because they work abroad , is really unfair since they have as much love for their country as others who live here....

In this age of global village concept? It is like the people going to other states in our own country and settle there or people going to other cities other than they got their education, there is no harm as long as they hold Indian passport and fully connected with their own country and as much responsible for the uplifting in various aspects. There is nothing wrong.
Answered
Sandhya Rani Yes of course. There are NRIs who are interested in serving mother country through foreign funds. As you have mentioned, it's fine.
But if we take the list of talented Indian doctors, engineers and scientists who have settled abroad, only a few hold Indian passport.

I agree that they are not so patriotic and are more bothered about more money rather than serving motherland. But this is also a matter of state policy. Quite often there are less job opportunities in India and the students go abroiad for job. It is for government to ensure that training facilities and job opportunities are inter linked. If there are no job opportunities in India in certain trade, there is no reason why training facilities be created.

Comments by Sandhya contain lot of truth. It is natural that the youth decide what is better option. This is also like doctors refusing to work in villages. There is also nothing unlawful about this. But this tendency also indicates that our youth give more importance to money than patriotism. There is need for government to regulate the brain drain. It is fact that slary is much more in America. The merchant navy companies in India give much less salary than American companies. There is need to increase salary in Indian companies that compete with foreign.

Sandhya Rani Poor people belonging to lower living status went abroad to earn better for the family. It's only because they cant support family with the wages they get here. Otherwise, how many of them do prefer to stay away from parents, spouse and children in sake of a few dollars they earn more?

This query is fully based on those extra talented and brilliant students from India who settle abroad only to earn more and live in better living standard. It's true, India can never pay like US or UK do. But if such professionals stay in India, our India can definitely reach a position where it's capable to give salary to employees equal to US, UK or any other gulf countries

Sandhya Rani Though we criticize a lot about government salaries or salaries offered by corporate, what's the per capita income of our country? When a labourer of Kerala earns 700-1200 rs per day working for just 5 or 6 hrs, UP or many other north Indian states give less than 100. It may be not sufficient for a family of 4 or 6 members. So, if such poor people go abroad, we can't blame anyone.
Actually there should be a regulation in law nationwide so that a labourer/worker gets minimum wages so that he can support his family. It's better if there is a uniformity in wages all over the country.

Our country gives comparatively less salary to government employees than private organizations. May be because they are not profit oriented. But the problem is, it demotivates even talented employees to work less, because government never gives salary hike based on his talent, instead based on his years of experience. If government is able to make such changes in the process, we can see many brilliant people staying here
