Why is Bone China called so?

Its not even made up of bones, so why this peculiar name is given to such fine objects?

Bone China is so called because powdered animal bone is mixed with the clay to give it translucency and whiteness.

Bone China is a porcelain which was evolved in a process. This porcelain is known for its pure whiteness.

Animal bone is used as the main ingredieents in its preparation... In the evolution "China stone" and "China Clay" are also being added  to prepare this type of porcelain.

As Bones and products named with China are used, it is named as "China Bone".

Bone china named so because bone china is a type of porcelain, which is composed of bone ash, feldspar material and kaolin. Since it is derived of animal bone and calcium phosphate and is translucent in its look. Though in UK and US bone china is referred to as English porcelain.

Hi Kalyani,

Bone china is stronger and more translucent than the basic porcelain and it is considered to be the finest of all type..Inorder to make it so strong calcined bone ash (powdery ash left from the burning (calcination) of bones).Other than that Porcelain is generally called China which made the material to be called as Bone china.
