It was a folk song reused. I remember it being told by Amitabh Bachhan in one of his interviews. It is a folk song from UP. I have faint memories of that interview but somehow this part I am almost sure about

A friend of mine says, the song is actually inspired from a Lata song of the movie, Do Raaste - Apni Apni Biwi composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, not from a folk song. I am not sure if it's true or not. But definitely both the songs have some similarities. Waiting for more answers.
