The fastest computers can do billion of calculation every second. Their main ability is to do a lot of basic tasks quickly and accurately.
The English mathematician Charles Babbage (1792 -1871) designed a large calculating machine which, in theory, could be programmed, like a computer. But the electronic age had not yet dawned, and there was no way to give Babbage’s Analytical Engine the power it needed.
Computer is one of the cleverest machines invented by man. Have you ever wondered what a computer looks like on the inside? There are thousands of tiny switches inside a computer. They are like light switches. By switching them on or off in different combinations, a computer can do anything. Fifty years ago, the first computers were large enough to fill a room. Now, they are much smaller and are also easy to carry or move.
The instructions and programs a computer uses are called the software.
The mechanical and electronic parts of a computer are called the hardware.
Sony developed the compact disc (CD) in 1979, in Japan and Philips did the same in The Netherlands.
Philips made the video disc in The Netherlands in 1972.
The world’s first personal computer, called Apple II, was made in 1977.
Nowadays, computers have tiny microprocessors (a circuit containing all the function of a computer’s central processing unit) in them.
Internet
Internet is the biggest network of computers in the world. It is a technology which connects millions of computers across the world by means of cables, telephone wires or some wireless media of communication. The computers connected to the internet can easily access the information available on other computers. They can also be used to send and receive messages.
Useful of internet
Internet is very useful for everyone. It provides a lot of information on almost every topic. Some of its uses are:
a) You can search information nearly on any topic.
b) You can send and receive messages using the e-mail facility.
c) Internet is the biggest and the cheapest medium for advertising products and services.
d) Interne is used to purchase various item.
e) Internet is the best medium to communicate instantly with people sitting at far off places.
f) Most newspapers and TV channels have their website on the internet which provides latest news.
g) Internet also provides a wide collection of songs and movies.
h) You can use internet to play games online with different persons/players sitting in different parts of the world.
Computer net work
You can talk to your friend without meeting him by using a telephone or a mobile phone. For this, you simply make a call to your friend by dialing his phone number and listening to the ring. When the ring goes, he picks up the phone and you talk to him. It means you have connected your phone to his phone. Now you can talk or communicate with him.
Talking to your friend using a telephone means that you have used a communication network. In this case, it is called telephone network.
In the same way, we can connect two or more computers with each other. These computers are connected through telephone wires or cables. This connection is known as computer network.
E-mails
E-mails are the way to send messages to family, friends and offices.
World Wide Web (www)
World Wide Web is the largest collection of information on the internet.
Website
A website is a collection of related web pages which provides information about a person, business organization, educational institute, etc; a website is like a book which contains many pages.
Web page
A web page is just like a page of your book. It is a one of the part of a website.
We browser
We get information from different websites.
