Payasam is one of the delicacies of South Indian Cuisine.All festivals and important occasions like  birthday parties,marriages,wedding receptions,etc..never completes without serving Payasam.Payasam is derived from the Sanskrit word "Peeyusham" which means "Nectar".Though there are many varieties of payasam,my favorite is "Moong dal Payasam".It is a very healthy sweet dish because it is a delicious mixture of moong dal,coconut milk and dry fruits.

Here I have shared the recipe of "Moong dal Payasam".

Ingredients

Moong Dal            - 1/2 cup
Coconut Milk        - 1 cup
Cardamom           -  2
Dry grapes          - 3
Badam                 - 3
Ghee                   -  as required
Water                  - 3 cups
Jaggery              - 1 cup

Method of Preparation

1.Heat one tea spoon of ghee in a kadai and saute the moong dal on low flame.

2.Turn off the flame before the mong dal turns golden brown or dark red.

3.Add 3-4 cups of water to the moong dal and allow it to boil till it becomes soft.

4.Dissolve the jaggery in water and heat it in a kadai on low flame.

5.Continue stirring until you get a thin jaggery solution without lumps.

6.Mix the jaggery solution to the boiled moong dal and heat it until the dal and the jaggery solution blend well.It will approximately take 12-13 minutes.

7.Heat ghee in a kadai and roast the cardamom,dry grapes and badam.

8.Add the cup of coconut milk to the dish and add the roasted ingredients to it just 5 minutes before serving.

9.The delicious "Moong dal payasam" is ready to serve.

10.This delicious dish will gain more taste when served on banana leaf.
