The Bishop’s candlesticks
Many years ago there lived a Bishop. He was a king and godly person. A convict once escaped from prison and came to the Bishop’s house. He asked for shelter. The Bishop, not knowing who he was, gave him shelter and food. However, the man was in the habit of stealing. He got up when the Bishop was fast asleep.
`Let me take some valuables from this house and run away at once’, the convict said to himself. He looked around and found two silver candlesticks. In no time he hid them under his coat and ran away from the house.
The night was dark and cold and things went against him.
The police, who had been looking for the convict, were only too glad to arrest him. They brought him back to the Bishop. If the Bishop were to say that the man had stolen the candlestick, the convict would be punished. The bishop however, pitied the man and decided to forgive him. So he told the police that he had given the candlesticks to the convict. The convict was surprised that the bishop had forgiven him and saved him from punishment. He fell at the Bishop’s feet and asked pardon. From that day he decided to become an honest man and work for a living.
By forgiving, the Bishop brought back a man to the right path from which he had strayed.
