Introduction:
In recent days you might have heard the term “Global warming” frequently. All heads of government are seriously thinking about preventing and escaping from this threat.Summits of world leaders discuss about Global warming. So what is global warming and what is its effect in our India is to be checked.

What is Global Warming?

Global warming is the process of rising the average temperature of earth’s   atmosphere and ocean surface.Studies indicate that the temperature of earth had increased by 0.6 degree Celsius in 20 th century. One may ask why should it be worried in it if we are able to tolerate that small rise in temperature. But remember the temperature rise today may be low but our next generation may not be possible to survive this temperature. That is why continuous warning is given on this issue.

Also Global warming causes the melting of icy hills not only India but also all over the world. What will be the effect? The seas will get more water and many cities on the sea shore will be drowned. Also the speed of rotation of earth on its axis get changed. It will get slowed. As a result the length of day and night will also be changed. So we must be careful about the Global warming evil.

It is already noticed that the annual power of winds had considerably increased. This is because of the increase in their duration as well as intensity. We know that the winds have relation with the temperature of sea.So if we enquire why these winds blow so horribly will realise that actually global warming plays there.

What is the cause?

Actually what is the cause of  Global warming ? In my opinion the real cause is the accumulation of green house gases in the atmosphere. The main green house gases are carbon dioxide, methane, ozone etc.Water vapour also add to this.Burning of fossil fuels like petroleum and caol is the major source of carbon dioxide production which is the top contributor to global warming.

The carbon dioxide in the atmosphere behaves like a mirror. It reflects the heat radiations from earth back to itself causing the atmosphere to become warm. This is what is called Green House Effect. This in effect causes global warming. The percrntage of contribution of different sectors is given below.

Sector                                                                %

Industries                                                       16.8
Power Houses                                                21.3
Fuels Burning                                                 14
Agricultural Byproducts                                12.5
Petroleum mining & purification                    11.3
Commercial & Residential production           10.3
Biomass burning                                             10.4
Waste treatment                                               3.4

Global warming in India.

Global warming is the new threat in front of which all the government of the world are standing stunned. There is no difference between developed and developing countries in front of this threat. The thoughtless activities of our own hands had invited this giant. India is also not free from the threat of Global Warming. Here is a report.

Britishers were the long time rulers of India .So they were aware of the geography of our mother land very well. Also they conducted many research works in India due to its geographical as well as climatical varieties. The Himalayan ranges were their all time favourite centre of research and experiments. A few years ago a  British team  conducted an expedition to Gokhala Green lake of Sikkim .Sikkim is a state in  North India. The hilly ranges of Sikkim is a part of Himalaya. The expedition  team released  a stunning news to world - They found that the snowy hills of Northern Sikkim has been  melting for years. The reason is nothing but Global Warming.

The team conducted expeditions in the hills namely Tsemu,Thonksong and Taloong of the same state. They discovered that all these hillls are being getting morphed for the last 80 years. They took the photo of Taloong hill at present and compared  with the file photoes of an expedition that conducted years ago in 1930 . It was found that within 80 years the hill had shortened about 70 meters !!!It means nearly one meter shortening per year.

Thonksong and Taloong hills were once connected by a snowy layer. This connection has been lost now due to Global Warming .The file photoes of these hills when examined , revealed that once all of them were connected and were a single large hill. The present condition  strongly  points to the future threats due to  Global Warming. Thoughtless Industrialisation and Tourism development activities also had added momentum to this global problem.

India's Science and Technology Department has been observing the phenomenon for a long period. They use remot sensing methods with the help of satellites. The melting was already observed by these satellites.Sikkim Government also had taken a creative step. They constituted  a commission to study the problem. Prof: Syed Iqbal Hasnain is the chief of the commission.

Sikkim is abundant with a lot of snowy hills. At present more than seventy five snowy hills are there in Sikkim. Also many rivers are there in this beautiful Himalayan state. The melting of hills had caused to low down the water level of Teesta river and Ramgith river.

Through experiments and analysis it is estimated that the temperature of earth will rise about 3° to 5° C  by the year 2100..(fortunately we may not be there to experience it)  .This much rise in temperature will also rise the sea level by 25 meters. The India gate at Mumbai will be under water in those days. Not only India Gate many towns on the sea shore will become under water world!! The huge Himalaya which is the synonym of risky tasks will become a history after ten more generations!!

How to Prevent ?

Now it is high time to think on this. How can we escape from this threat?Eventhough total escape is impossible we can take some silly steps to reduce the global warming.Adopt the following activities as far as possible.
1)    Reduce all the activities that produce carbon dioxide
2)    Plant trees as far as possible
3)    Use bi-cycles for small journeys and use public conveyance methods for long
4)    Make people aware about the harmful effects of this threat
5)    Discourage all activities leading to Global Warming.
