Causes & Home Remedies For Sensitive Teeth

Tooth sensitivity is a common problem among millions of people all over the world. Basically, tooth sensitivity is a sensation that creates pain and discomfort on the nerves when they are exposed to extreme hot or cold beverages, sweets and ice cream etc.

Some people even feel difficulty in brushing and flossing. The level of sensation can differ from just a little irritation to intense pain.

Tooth sensitivity is caused due to the thinning of tooth enamel that covers dentin, which is the inner part of the teeth. When the outer enamel began to wear out, the dentin becomes exposed and makes it difficult and painful to eat sugary candies, sweet dishes or drink hot and cold drinks and also triggers pain when it comes in contact with hard objects or is exposed to cold air.

This exposure leads to the crack of hard protective enamel and allows hard and cold sensation to penetrate these cracks and reach the nerves to cause discomfort. Broken teeth and tooth decay can cause sensitivity. Often teeth whitening products also causes tooth sensitivity.

Oral hygiene which includes proper brushing and flossing regularly and eating healthy balanced food can prevent tooth sensitivity. For maintaining oral health, it is necessary to visit dentist every three or four months. If tooth sensitivity last for more than three or four days, visit your dentist for proper diagnosis and advice.

Ignoring the symptoms and self medication can lead to complications. Your dentist can advice the right kind of tooth paste for sensitive teeth. Mild and desensitizing toothpaste can relieve you from pain and sensation.

Some tooth whitening toothpaste due to its increased abrasive content can cause harm to the tooth enamel and cause sensitivity. In the same way anti tartar also causes tooth sensitivity many a times. Using tooth brush that has soft bristle with gentle stroke will prevent the enamel from wearing down. Avoid acidic food and get the cracks filled by dentist to prevent sensitivity.

There are many home remedies that can help to get relief from sensitivity. Garlic is one of them. Place it in the affected area to get relief. Chewing raw onion can also reduce the discomfort. Placing cloves on the affected area can also help in relieving pain and sensitivity.
