Free fall in rupee making scary headlines in print as well as electronic media, engaging our attention, triggering unseemly blame games and all that. Why as Indians, should be losing our sleep on it? It is not mainly because of our oil import which is a guzzler of our foreign exchange. There are other reasons too, we a nation of net importers and all these talk of improving our export performance has not resulted in any improvement at all. China has deliberately kept its currency devalued to reward its exports through value addition. We have utterly failed to export value-added products and services. If you calculate the huge outgo of foreign exchange on account of payment of royalty and technical fees that most of our maultinational subsidiaries pay to their parents for intangible intellectual property, you would be in for a rude shock. Pranab Mukherjee as Finance Minister lifted the earlier cap on this payment in 2009 and according to an ET survey a total of 35000 crore went out of this country on this score. Mind you this much was transferred not for any new inventive technologies but for use of brands which have been there for the last 20 years!

We boast of churning out engineers, scientists and all those people but there is not a single Indian global brand to generate reverse foreign exchange flow. All of us pay or made to pay foreign exchange for using foreign brands in almost any product you can think, from toothpaste, toothbrush, healthcare products and what not!!! If you look at South Korea, a small nation which is perpetually in tension with North Korea, you can see for yourself what commitment to excellence is. "Samsung" brand alone generates 20% of GDP of the country and I am leaving out its roaring success in the automobile sector. And our leaders are still busy providing food security!!!

Apparently, our economy is in very bad shape and we have overall adverse balance of trade. There is need for austerity especially in order to reduce imports.

It is morning when we wake up. government should be control out flow of $$ and public should be used India products. Indian Products are not much bad quality.
A country whose import bills are bigger than its export certainly needs to worry if it's currency is loosing value at such a fast rate. It shows there is something seriously missing which our experts are not able to see.

Its scary to think that we are so entirely dependent on one country and even a minute fluctuation there affects us more than it does them...what a situation ! PC has put the blame squarely on Pranab Mukherji ...

Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are two steps ahead !!!

Chidambaram's efforts to project himself in glory while damning his predecessor is ludicrous and thoroughly unethical but Mr. Mukherji's performance as FM should be put under the scanner. He is known to be an astute politician without any scruples to advance his own self-interest. He was a professor in political science without any expertise in economics and he devoted much of his tenure in doing fire-fighting for his party utterly neglecting his duties as FM and Chidambaram the perpetual minister of India as he feels like a fish out of water when out of office - must be alluding to this aspect.

The economy is in bad shape. The sensex is down. But there is improvement on PM's assurance.

Sensex or nifty are not much influenced by someone's comments whose track record in his second term is awfully deficient and I am firmly convinced that Indian stock markets are in for more shocks and surprises. FIIs are net sellers and there is absolutely no reason to feel assured.

It only goes to show how volatile the situation is...If one actually analyses PMs speech there is nothing much there to reassure since he has only spoken out of desperation. His very image as a retiring person hiding behind The family without a firm grip and the seemingly confident but shallow FM dont inspire anybody who has an iota of sense...Let us wait for the next week and see if his words really carry that much of an impact !

May be PC is right but it is not time blaming others. It is time to do some serious to control situation. Now PM said that use less petrol dieseal. Why central government banned to use private vehicles for employees for some time and arrange special public transport service for them
Now Jaitley says that PM has got no idea how to come out of crisis. But is opposition also not supposed to give constructive advice or suggestions?
