Undoubtedly, our first Prime minister Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru is architect of modern India. we are celebrating his birth centenary. No doubt we have made considerable progress in communication and transport post Nehru era but whatever we are today or what we hope to be in future, we owe to his foresight and the foundation laid by him. Pt Nehru rightl described Bhakra and other das as Idia's modern temples.

No doubt as first Prime Minister of India he discharged his duties as per his best abilities but his choice of celebrators was not perfect. His choice of Russia and attention towards China disappointed the super powers of the world that cost dearly to rapid progress of India as they overlooked India.

Had he given equal importance to America and other European countries and stayed away from old and costly technology of Russia the India today would be a different place.

He did not plan his strategies for neighboring countries properly.

There can always be more than one way of doing things. Nehru followed the policy of non alignment and worked for Afro Asian unity. It is natural that the new republic would be slighly biased against imperialist powers. Nehru is also credited with laying foundation of modern India through five year plans. In fact, whatever we are today we owe to Nehru.

Nehru laid the democratic foundation and nursed it. It has kept India united. It is sad that today some sections should cast doubts about his actions just to dilute his image for political reasons. But his image will withstand all these.

Nehru is architect of modern India, but that was almost 60 years back and the way India need to be developed is no where to be seen, I hope that will be changing soon with real architect of now PM.

None can be compared to Nehru.  Let us all remember that the Public Sector that made a huge contribution to the nation, in terms of goods or services at reasonable prices, is a boon to the people, even today.  For example, imagine if NLC is a private organization.  The power tariff will go through the roof.

Any organization, even in the Public Sector, has to be viewed in the overall perspective, for it to be meaningful.  Only Nehru had the Vision to see the future.  He was an outstanding leader of his time.

@   Public sector has proved to be the worst as far productivity and investment ratio is concerned. You should know the return ratio is too poor than what government spends on this sector. The financial results are too poor than what we spend on these white elephants.

Apart from few units most of public sectors are performing badly and about Nehru's vision, he is the first PM and he started from where Britishers left us. Most of modern day suprises started by british in India.

I don't say Nehru did nothing but he did not know people living in rural areas. he talked with them as if he was talking to city dwellers but villagers thought he was a very educated and almost as cultured as British therefore felt happy listening to him. Everything British was considered class those days. (Even today)

It is not fair to say that Nehru did not understand rural people. Someone else says he did not understand neighboring countries. Yet someone says he did not understand economics and investment. For someone who wrote "Discovery of India" these type of comments indicate a calculated indifference and inability to understand Nehru the person. He belonged to a cultured family and was an educated person who loved his country and its people so much that he fought for its freedom w/o knowing that he will become its PM one day unlike today's leaders who fight only for chair. If some of us for ideological reasons find it difficult to accept him let us at least not try to find whimsical reasons for the immense love then Indians showered on him.
