CHENNAI: The organs of 35-year-old Kuberan, a painter who was declared brain dead in the city, have given a new lease of life to at least seven patients.

Kuberan, who met with a road accident while returning home after attending a wedding in Salem, was immediately rushed to the nearby primary healthcare centre and then shifted to the Vinayaka Mission in Salem.

Then from there he was referred to the Global Hospitals in Chennai on Thursday. Here, he was declared brain dead and his wife signed the consent forms for organ donation. Doctors soon harvested his heart, kidneys, liver and eyes.

The heart was given to a patient who suffered end-stage heart failure at the Government General Hospital. The traffic police opened the green corridor and the heart reached the GH from Perumbakkam in less than 30 minutes.

His liver and one kidney were used by Global Hospitals and the other kidney was given to the Apollo Hospitals. The eyes were transported to the Egmore eye bank.

Nothing can be much service to mankind other than giving new life to others.
