Use of un, non and anti
in Improving English Writing Skills
The prefix non, anti and un often make words that appear to carrysame meaning. For example unsocial, non social and anti social. Similarly, the words- unlawful, illegal and non legal appear confusing.
I think that there is subtle difference. Non social is one who is not social. Unsocial is worse than simply non social. Anti social is one who is against society and is dangerous. similarly, unlawful means something against law and not permissible. Illegal is that strictly prohibited by law and punishable.
There may be similar other words made by using prefixes. We need to distinguish between un, in, non, anti etc. I hope others will continue this discussion.

    Of course, these compound words are bit complicated parts of any language and it can be learned clearly only through practice.

    I will try to post some examples for the benefit of new learners, if possible.

    Guru- I am reminded of the examples. unsocial and anti social; unlawful and illegal. Unsocial means that some one is not social but this is not an offence. Anti social is a criminal. Unlawful means not according to law but the person is not a criminal or offender. Illegal means that the person is guilty of some breach of law and may be punished. I hope Guru- you can make the concept clearer by further refining the concept and giving more examples.
