A World Health Organisation backed study has claimed that India has a higher rate of depression than any other country.

The study, ‘Cross-national epidemiology of DSM-IV major depressive episode,’ revealed that nearly 36 per cent of Indians suffered from Major Depressive Episodes (MDE). To be diagnosed with MDE, a subject has to qualify for five of nine symptoms, which include indicators such as appetite, sleep, mood, lack of concentration and suicidal thoughts.

Neighbouring China has the lowest MDE with 12 per cent.

WHO report is unreliable. Indians may have less income but it is inconceivable that most of them would be depressed lot. In fact the westerners are most depressed. That is why they turn to fake Indian spiritual gurus like Mahesh Yogi and others from time to time and wander as hippies and Beatles.

No need to attch that much importance to the depressing report of WHO!How come the economy of such depressed people attracting world-wide attention!
Depression may be higher in our country as our population is high and opportunities are less.

I think depression is there in other countries too as it has no boundaries and it will be there as long as human beings survives on this mother Earth...
I think the base of this survey that is sampling might not be identical in different countries.

Europeans are most susceptible to suicides under depression since they can't compromise with their life-style and in case of financial instability, they get forced to take such step.

Another example is of increasing rate of divorce, high toll of rape, peculiar robberies, major crisis such as sub-prime etc in western countries are few examples which lead major part of their population to get into depressive state.

Arise Awake and Rest Not till the Goal is Achieved.
People who are depressed don't take their condition seriously this may lead to suicide..
Here are more links on the issue. According to the report, India is among the contries where people suffer from depression more. There is least depression in China.

Possible the reportis based on number of people admitted in hospitals for this disorder. The report is obviously baseless. It is glaring fact that westerners get depressed more and they rush to our cheat and fake religious saints for getting 'peace'.

Depression is a global phenomenon and no country is free from it and more importantly how a study can base its conclusion on the number of admissions in hospitals alone ignoring other variables!
Moreover, mere absolute number is not relevant to arrive at a conclusion. Indian population is more and hence the number of patients for any disorder will be more. It is more relevant to work out ratio as a percentage or per thousand. I hope that the number of patients for depression per thousand will be more in western countries.
