India  is a sovereign democratic republic. She is the biggest democracy in the eastern world. She has enjoyed democracy for more than four decades. It shows that democracy has become a strong force with a strong foundation in India.

The citizens of India understand the meaning of Abraham Lincoln’s definition of ‘democracy’ : ‘ It is a form of government of the people , by the people and for the people.” On account of the huge population of India, the country has the representative form of government. The citizens elect their representatives who form and run the government.

The democratic freedom given to the citizens allows them to follow different political ideologies and hence different political parties come into existence. The political parties represent their views of different group of people on the kind of political, social and economic life they want the government to give them. To get it the followers of each political creed want to make their political party to come to power. If the majority of the voters favor a particular political party, it comes to power and tries to satisfy the demands of the followers of the political party by enacting suitable laws. Th other political parties have to accept them. But if the party in power does anything that displeases not only the opposition but also many of the members of the ruling party,  a no-confidence motion if brought against the ruling party and it is thrown out of power. Either the leader of the opposition forms the new government or a new election is held.

The candidates who contest in the election are of different kinds. Some of them are highly educated people. Some other candidates are half-educated and several of them are nearly uneducated. Some candidates are rich while the others are no.  But all of them understand the meaning of franchise, their political faiths and what they should do if elected. In other words, literacy and financial status are no bar to real public service. This is what Indian democracy has proved.More and more children are getting educated year after year several facilities are offered to the public to get all their children educated. Therefore in the near future all the indians will be found possessing the  minimum education, that is the higher secondary school education. The voters and the candidates will understand the political faiths much better than they do now. The elected will not play the mere ‘yes-men’ at the parliamentary sessions, but will show some critical talent.

Since educated are educating the uneducated in the matter of understanding their political faiths, even the uneducated show a great deal of discernment when they cast their votes in an election. Their common sense also helps them to know what political party should be brought and govern them so that may be benefitted. The uneducated and the half-educated people in India are involved in foreign trade as much as the educated. So they understand several facts related to foreign exchange. They understand the changes in the values of the indian rupee from time to time and also the meaning and causes of a deficit budget and its implications. They are on their guard and take steps to ensure India’s financial status. If the ruling party does not rise to the expectations of the citizens, it is not voted to power at the next elections.

In every field of life the citizens of india have started following the democratic principles. The sense of equality and the method of election adopted to get office-bearers of various unions, organizations and associations clearly reveal the spirit of democracy found in the people of India. To the democratic has become a second nature with them. From the domestic circle upto the government of the country the rule and spirit of democracy prevails.

Hence democracy is deep-rooted in India. It has a long and bright future in India.
