A farmer had three donkeys. They were called Dos, Bos, and Hos. The farmer had not much use of them. So the donkeys remained idle and very often.

One day Dos was standing at the back of the farm. He found a large carrot lying in the ditch. It was a juicy carrot. Dos donkey was full of joy. In fact, he was so happy about it that he could not keep quiet. Instead of eating the carrot quietly, he raised his head and started braying: `Eeyore!’

The other two donkeys came running to see what the matter was. They saw the nice juicy carrot lying in the ditch. And they, too, wanted to eat it.

But Dos put his body in the way and said, `no, this in my carrot. You can’t eat it’.

Bos, tried to reach the carrot with his hoof. `Get away,’ he said. `This is my carrot.

`I am feeling very hungry,’ said hee-haw. `Let me eat this carrot.’ And he tried to push the brothers away.

Dos saw that he won’t be able to eat the carrot in peace. He thought of a plan to decide the matter.

`Let us see who can bray the loudest,’ he said. `He who brays the loudest shall have the carrot.’

The other two donkeys agreed to it. So the competition began.

Dos brayed first of all: `Eeyore!’

A little rabbit was passing by the ditch. He heard the loud noise. He stopped there to see what it was about.

Now it was Bos’s turn to bray. His voice was so loud that the little rabbit had to shout his ears with his paws. Then Hos brayed as loud as could: `Eeyore!’

These donkeys have very ugly and loud voice s’, thought the rabbit. `They will make me deaf. I should go away and find some food for my self.’

Just then he saw the nice juicy carrot lying in the ditch. His mouth watered and he wanted to eat it. When he came close to the ditch, the there donkeys saw him.

`Look! Here is a rabbit,’ cried Hos.’ `he will tell which of us brayed the loudest’.

So they made the rabbit their judge. But the rabbit was very clever. He didn’t want the juicy carrot should go to any of the donkeys. He said in a very clever way. `Three was not much to choose between your braying. Why don’t you have a race? Then we can easily tell which of you should have the carrot.’ That’s a good idea’, said the donkeys. `Friend Rabbit, where shall we race to?’

All round field and back again to were I am sitting,’ answered the rabbit. `Now are you ready? It is one, two three-go!’

Away went the three donkeys at top speed. They ran as fast as they could. Each tried to win the race.

The three donkeys reached their starting point almost at the same moment. Each thought it had won.

`I have won,’ said Dos.

`no, I came first,’ brayed Bos.

`Let us ask the rabbit which of us name first,’ said Hos. `We will accept his decision.’

So they called to the rabbit. But there was nbo answer! Then thy looked for the carrot. It was also gone!
