Water is essential to every living being. It is an important natural resource needed in every field and make life possible on the earth. We use water for dirking, washing, bathing, cooking and cleaning in our daily life; similarly water is required for growing crops, for industries and produce Hydro-electricity.

The important source of water is the rainfall. Rivers, canals, tanks and wells are the other sources. They supply water to the agriculture besides domestic purpose. Now let us know about each source of water.

Wells are of two types, open wells and tube wells. Wells provide water to the fields by the help of animals, engines, electrical pump sets etc.

Canal irrigation has become the principle source in our country. Canals are dug from the water sources to the other areas to supply water.

The south Indian farmers use the tank irrigation. It is more risk prone than canals, because most of the tanks are dependent on the rain for water.

A barrier built across a river is called a dam. Such dams are built to block and store the flow of river water.
