The death sentence is part of Indian law, yet only 3 have been hanged in 15 years and even notorious killers and rapists have not been hanged by some misplaced logic of Supreme court. The question is do Hindus have a stomach for capital punishment and is another manfestation of meek and mild hindu. There are about 800 persons on death row, some for more than 10 years

Where is question of talking about Hindus here, as India as a nation no national religion. There has been provisions for appeal and that takes time. It is to ensure that law goes on right path and then the person goes for hanging. I do not think 800 persons are lined up for this, most of these are on lower courts.

We may not have a national religion but 90% of men wielding power are Hindus. May be 95%.  As on 30 oct 212 , 477 confirmed prisoners were on death row. The number has gone up. Some of the senteces are confirmed and no execution for over 12 years.  Other countries like Japan and Thailand carry out immediate execution. I am not mentioning Pak and USA. My point is we have misplaced zeal and that is the reason hangings are so rare.

Further 99% of teh SC judges are Hindus. It is in effect a Hindu government, though it does not have that nomenclature

The rights take human life is rest with state. One should not be hanged till his guilty is completely proven and that is why there is slow rate of execution of capital punishment in order to see whether any loophole in system is not placing innocent person in the table of guilty. As life cannot be returned once death occurs so there is delay in execution.

Unless one is proved his guiltiness and  the courts drag the court proceedings for generation, it is the biggest crime.

Capital punishment is barbaric and many western countries have abolished this. There is nothing peculiar about Hindus. The ancient Hindu law provided for capital punishment.  Presently, the purpose of law is reform and not revenge as in ancient days. Hence extreme penalty of death sentence is limited to 'rarest of the rare' cases.

True sir. Instead of capital punishment, there should Reformatory measures to be taken. A criminal will never remain as a criminal forever. He should be given a chance.

I India it is limited to rarest of rare cases and death convicts have enough chances to prove innocent, even honorable President approves it, they can re appeal the judgment. One cannot deny of death sentence to extreme barbaric convicts in exceptional and unimaginable cases.

May be rare. But death penalty should be replaced by Reformations as Kiran Bedi done in Tihar Jail.

Kiran bedi herself justified death for Nirbhaya killer rapists. There can be no reforms for such persons
