Indian manufacturing and other activities are not dependent on indigenous research. They are dependent on research in other countries esp the West. Some level of applied research is done in India in few select sectors. India is many decades away from doing its own in house research. This is because it requires huge amount of capital and risk taking abilities and the firms should be unable to survive if they do not innovate. None of these factors exist at the moment in India and Indian industries. This is in no way a reflection on Indian brain power only Research becomes possible and sustainable at a particular economic threshold level of a country. India is now an emerging country so R&D activities have still to wait. Many of us will keep talking about our distant past when we did this and that, but at that time we were high up in the economic scale.

Can there be a present or future without past?

Lot many intellectuals in the 4th and 5th century AD India started asking such unproductive questions and ever since science took a back seat and is still struggling to find its rightful place.

Do you know when Venkataraman Ramakrishnan or Amartya Sen won the Nobel prize? Certainly not before 6000 years ago BC.

For their work which they did outside India and not in India -that is the difference I am pointing out. When Tata developed the Nano it was a proud moment for Indians because it was done in India by Indians in Indian environment in present times. VR and AS are Indians by birth but by choice they are working away from India. There achievements do not in any way reflect Indian science and research. Why should we shine in their reflected glory.

Outside or inside, they are Indians. Their brains are Indian brains. They might have done their work outside. But they did not fix a brain from outside India. Please know that Amartya sen worked entirely in India.

All brains are same, it is the environment which makes them productive or non productive. Rajat Gupta fell in wrong company and landed in jail - why should Indians feel sorry for him. To the best of my knowledge AS worked on the Bengal famine and its economic repercussions for some time.. I am only stressing a point that in India Indians are still many decades away from innovative work for reasons already stated earlier. Give the same amount of capital and demand in India Indians will also contribute wonderful products and technologies. It is not about Indians inability. it is about the scale of economic development

My head bows before these Indian scientists with reverence who could make a mark even with what you said as scale of economic development. Don't you think it's a great achievement? Any body can achieve anything with all the infrastructure around. It's great to achieve something without any infrastructure around. Sir CV Raman has done his experiments with a broken microscope which is still preserved in Bangalore. It's only a bad worker blames the tools.
Scientists are thinkers and inventors and amabssadors of state, and they alter the world in the way we look into it.

Wise men be it a scientist or a philosopher have their own mission. They remain unperturbed and undisturbed oblivious of external influences. They never complain about their tools. They work with single minded dedication towards their Mission.
