Yes thats very true, it is only when you lose that you realise the value. This aspect of human nature or rather weakness is beautifully portrayed in the classic film Gone with the Wind....It happens with most of us as well !

Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are two steps ahead !!!

When we have something in hand after doing little work, we are happy. When we start achieving more and more of it, it becomes usual and we forget it value. The value comes to our mind when we hanker after it again and again but finally fail to achieve it.
Sometimes it happens that we are hankering after something but cannot get it. After tremendous hard work we finally get it. That looses all love and attraction for that thing. It makes person sad because he cannot heal his pain. Such hard labour spoils every excitment.
Whenever someone have something in hand, they will not realize the value of it until it is lost.

'Familiarity breeds contempt' as the saying goes, more and easy accessibility to a precious thing makes it cheap

True, there is also a saying that what is grown in your backyard is never considered ...at the same time there is also a saying Out of sight, out of mind - this too can happen in some cases. So, ideally one should learn to balance things out without going overboard about anything especially with regard to relationships !

I agree. What you have is not valued and what you do not have is highly valued. Often we realize the value when we lose. This is true not only about things but also persons.

One more familiar colloquial saying is in vogue in Telugu community. If translated loosely, it goes like this. "The moment a person dies, His once ridiculed narrow and chink eyes look as wide as a lotus petal."
