• All of us are required, every now and then, to write letters, either to our friends, or on business. The various types of letters that we are usually required to write in our everyday life are given below.

Letter- writing

*Private or friendly letters are those that are written to friends, relative, or acquaintances. They are, therefore, written in free-and –easy manner. Their style is chiefly conversational. They are like friendly talks touching upon many private or familiar topics.

To write a good letter of this kind, the best thing to do is to imagine that your friend to whom you are writing is sitting near you and then put down just what you would like to say to him. In this way you will be able to write an interesting and natural letter.

In writing letters you must attend to the flowing points of from:-

  • The heading

The heading consists of (a) the writer’s address; add (b) the date. Write your own address at the right hand of the top page and put the date just below it. For example:-

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------06- 60 bhavani road

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hyderabad

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------August 22, 2009

*The date should be written as follows: - 22nd August 2009, or August 22nd, 2009.

*Do not write 22-08- 2009, which is not pretty to look at and is not polite. Notice also that it is better to write 22nd August, 2009 then August 22nd, 2009.

  • Greeting or solution

After you have written your address and date, go to the left-hand side of the page and write Salutation. The form of greeting will depend upon the relation in which you stand to the person to whom you are writing.

*To members of your family, for example, it will be-

It is like -my dear father, my dear mother, dear uncle, dear aunt, dear Sankar, dear latha etc.

*To friends it will be as follows:-

Like it is- dear Mr. Ganesh, Dear Mohan, My dear Ram, etc.

  • Body of the letter

This is, of course, the main part of the letter. It should be written in a natural and easy style. It should divide in to paragraphs if the letter is long. The language used should be simple and direct.

  • Leave –taking or subscription

When you have finished you letter, at the end of it, write the words of leave taking at the right –hand side of the letter, with your name bellow it, thus:------------------------------------------------------------------------------yours sincerely.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rajesh.

  • Address on the envelop

This should be written very clearly thus:-

Sri Siva Ram,

45, Gowravva silk house road

Mumbai- 400043
