Now Bangalore officially becomes Bengaluru. What will happen if changing a name. is there any crime going to occur less due to that name change.?

I sense a peculiar heading to this thread, how is naming city in coloqual language is related with any improvement in the first place and the changing of name is suitable for locals as they have been calling it in their langauge, like my state, we called it Odisha since ages but earlier it was Orissa and now changed it perhaps few months back, so it is convenient for locals and locals stay there most of times.

That's what it matters. How the locals use it without feeling odd is the main criteria otherwise changing names makes no difference but only creates confusion esp if done to please a particular political party or communal section.

Yes it is the locals who know best. But why it has taken so many decades to restore names of cities and states after independence is not understandable - it should have been done much earlier and that is why many are raising questions.

And imagine the changed or new city names will have to be replicated in various hoarding, boards, railway station, airport and even textbooks..and the money for this--citizens indirectly end up paying for such frivolous activities when there are grave issues to be dealt with. Condition of railways, security of girl children in schools, pitiable condition of public transport and the list goes on.

Changing the name of any city does not bring any change or improvement in itself, but adds to the confusion initially and only satisfies the ego of people who wanted a more localized version of the name of the city.

I couldnot agree more. Obviously, such change in name may satisfy locals but creates confusion worldwide. The new names are difficult to pronounce. But local are very adamant. I remember that Marathis often lost temper when someoy mentioned 'Mumbai' instead of ol name 'Bombay'. I wonder how the Martahis would react to the songs- 'jara hat ke jara bach
h ke yeh hai Bombay meri John.' , 'Main bambai ka baabu naam mera anjaana'.

But it is okay to change names when the names used by British are not commnly accepted. For example, the city 'Mathura' was spelt as 'Muttra' and 'Kanpur' as 'cawnpore'.

And no one says LUCK NOW to my city as spelled by Brits but it's still LAKHNAU for all of us

Okay. What matters is overall convenience. The anglicized names were well in practice and hence the change is inconvenient. It may be okay to change in a few cases but the overenthisasm for change f naes of places is very disgusting and unproductive. A street or city that is known all over the world by a particular name will only bring inconvenience to most people. Even names of countries have been changed only for local aspirations. Just the case of Burma that is now called Mynamar. It was easy to pronounce 'Burma'. Some may suggest that 'Meerut' be renamed as 'Merath', 'Delhi' as 'dilli', and so on. All this can only confuse .

It was no Merath but 'Meyrastra' but no one will ask for that change, because it means city of demons city where in-laws of Ravana lived.

Even in India itself some villages are called with the city names. For that local peoples it is okay. If you are a new person to visit a country then lot of confusions will arise. If you visit Coimbatore there are 3 places with the same name "Edarpalayam". In chennai itself one village is named as "Kannada palayam". Do they change the name?. Due to the name change lot of confusions only get arising.

Some names are quite ridiculous, on Bangalore Mangalore highway there is a name plate which shows a mud road leading to Paris....Apparently it is a small broken down hotel and the surrounding area is called Paris too...

There is one Singapore village (pronounced Singapur) very very close to Pune! I guess people who live there can proudly claim that they have lived in Singapore all their lives! :woohoo:

Names of villages and colonies do not matter so much as these are of interest only to locals. Every city has number of colonies or sub colonies in same name. Hence it is necessary always to mention complete addtess of any place in correspondence and also verbal communication to somebody. I live here in shanti Kunj, West Arjun Nagar agra. There are some other places also naed shanti Kunj or Shanti Nagar. If you don't mention the main colony or concerned post ofice/ police station/ street, there is likely to be confusion.

I agree names of villages and colonies do not matter if we provide the complete postal address for communication. In fact it is trend now in Pune and other places to name the apartments after places which are in foreign countries...such as Heliconia, California, Wisteria Plams, Whistling Palms and what not ..we hardly hear Indian names such as Madhupusha etc. Here no body has a problem when such foreign names are used. When in reality there are no pucca roads leading to such apartments holding fancy names.
