Long ago, Kushwant Singh said Indians lack the sense of humour especially when it comes to laughing at one's self. He laughs at others but doesn't have the guts to laugh at himself.

The best sense of humor is the art when some one knows to laugh on himself. He says everything making him the center of point of humor. Laughing on others is easy, the best humor where one knows to laugh on himself.

I agree but it does not come easily to most people especially in India...In fact , most analysts say that it shows self confidence in a person when he or she is able to laugh at himself /herself...

Some one mentioned Khushwant sing but he was almost always self-praising self centered describing his own achievements and liking and disliking people with his own point of view, how many girls he freinded and (???) all the trash but there was no humor there, so much unlike Punjabis. I can recall his "with malice toward one and all" filled with his self centered achievements those offer or add nothing to humor. I can quote recently departed Jaspal Bhatti a better example of humorist.

Apart from being self centered, Khushwant Singh's jokes were too raunchy and usually below-the-belt kind of jokes, not really appreciated by me. The perfect humorist in my opinion is P.G. Wodehouse, the kind of humor that I really like, quiet, subtle, directed towards oneself and totally gentlemanly.

Although, non-Marathi speaking people would not know him, but late novelist P.L. Deshpande, who passed away a few years ago was a humorist par excellence, the same category as of Wodehouse. Also his observations of very very mundane things, of people reacting to daily challenges and the situational and subtle comedy he created out of those was awesome!

I agree , Kushwant was never known for his sensitivity to others feelings and yes he was coarse...I too love reading Woddhouses works and find him extremely humorous in a intelligent way...have not heard of Deshpande , but I am sure he must be a very good humorist as you say if he is in the same class as Woddhouse...

I assure he is! :) His short stories have been adapted into plays and also translated in other languages. I must find some translated works and will let you know!

Indians are good at making humours using their sense of humour and presence of mind. I hope everyone is familiar with Sardarji Jokes.

Its true humor does not come easily to many, especially when it is directed at them personally. The same people who will throw barbs at others without thinking twice will immediately raise their hackles the moment a lighthearted comment is thrown at them and start crying foul. I have seen this happen over and over again here itself in the forums, what's more funnier is that, these people are those who claim to be funny and jolly!! Talk about being humorous, hee hee hee!

Very true Kalyani...Thats why I feel all the more that Indians lack a sense of humor, I don't see such a thing happening on other forums where there are people from all over he world participating and enjoying a good laugh even at the expense of being the target of that joke ... :cheer:

If you talk other forums where yours truly is considered king of humor ( I have no intention to mention any thing in detail or name any such forums) but I attract 100s of posts instantly from all parts of the world with so witty conversation that makes people roll on the floor laughing.

I know that sunil :) , on those forums all are equal and people have n ego hangups and humor is considered a two way interaction ...Thats why I say most Indians have no sense of humor in the real sense esp when they are at the receiving end ..

I am not able to find any actual translations as such, because his wife was very very particular and strict about copyrights stuff, but I did find a link to this blog where you can read a lot about him and the memorable characters he has created. There seem to be some translated stories as well but I have not yet read them

To understand subtlety one need to be very sensitive and should be able to catch those nuances which an average person generally misses. Otherwise the subtle things be it a literary piece or a suggestive line in a painting, will fly over the heads. Kushwant knows this. That's why he plays to the galleries

This is like people from 4 different states were competing for a big one- the question was " what is fastest thing on earth"
1- thought- as nothing works faster' that was given green signal
2- electricity- okay that was also found fine
3- blink- as that akes no time
4- a Punjabi- diarrhea- but why?
answer- last night after having dinner I was on the bed and before i could blink, switch on the light or think about it...it ....arrrr you know what happened... so that's how the diarrhea is supposed to be the fastest. And that's how Khushwant leads the table.
