Long ago, Kushwant Singh said Indians lack the sense of humour especially when it comes to laughing at one's self. He laughs at others but doesn't have the guts to laugh at himself.

The best sense of humor is the art when some one knows to laugh on himself. He says everything making him the center of point of humor. Laughing on others is easy, the best humor where one knows to laugh on himself.

I agree but it does not come easily to most people especially in India...In fact , most analysts say that it shows self confidence in a person when he or she is able to laugh at himself /herself...

Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are two steps ahead !!!

Some one mentioned Khushwant sing but he was almost always self-praising self centered describing his own achievements and liking and disliking people with his own point of view, how many girls he freinded and (???) all the trash but there was no humor there, so much unlike Punjabis. I can recall his "with malice toward one and all" filled with his self centered achievements those offer or add nothing to humor. I can quote recently departed Jaspal Bhatti a better example of humorist.

Its true humor does not come easily to many, especially when it is directed at them personally. The same people who will throw barbs at others without thinking twice will immediately raise their hackles the moment a lighthearted comment is thrown at them and start crying foul. I have seen this happen over and over again here itself in the forums, what's more funnier is that, these people are those who claim to be funny and jolly!! Talk about being humorous, hee hee hee!

I agree with that to a certain extent ...in fact Kushwant singh was always controversial in nature, although he did have his funny moments and Jaspal Bhatti was quite different, his was down to earth everyday humor that most people could identify with...

Apart from being self centered, Khushwant Singh's jokes were too raunchy and usually below-the-belt kind of jokes, not really appreciated by me. The perfect humorist in my opinion is P.G. Wodehouse, the kind of humor that I really like, quiet, subtle, directed towards oneself and totally gentlemanly.

Although, non-Marathi speaking people would not know him, but late novelist P.L. Deshpande, who passed away a few years ago was a humorist par excellence, the same category as of Wodehouse. Also his observations of very very mundane things, of people reacting to daily challenges and the situational and subtle comedy he created out of those was awesome!

Very true Kalyani...Thats why I feel all the more that Indians lack a sense of humor, I don't see such a thing happening on other forums where there are people from all over he world participating and enjoying a good laugh even at the expense of being the target of that joke ... :cheer:

I agree , Kushwant was never known for his sensitivity to others feelings and yes he was coarse...I too love reading Woddhouses works and find him extremely humorous in a intelligent way...have not heard of Deshpande , but I am sure he must be a very good humorist as you say if he is in the same class as Woddhouse...
