What happened in Tihar Jail is not commendable. The jail staff are responsible for security of the inmates and punishment can be only by court. The suggestion of amputation of limbs is more out of anger than the principles of punishment. Punishment is for reform and not for revenge. This may also be to set example as a deterrent.

Death sentence in rarest of the rare cases is okay for gang rape and murder. However, any punishment is not guarantee that similar crime will not recur. So other measures like taking precautions and changing mind set of people are also necessary. .


Maqbool The member of Indian Mujahideen group was involved in a murder case long ago. He was awarded death sentence and later it was converted to Life sentence.
After many years, the same Maqbool was found to have planned the recent Blasts in Hyderabad.
There is no guarantee that a criminal will change with the type of Punishment.
First of all I welcome the decision. And after reading the other responses I feel what Ushaji said is write. A criminal minded person can do whatever he wants even with one leg and hand. Keep him alive, but in such a way that he would ask for death and won't be allowed to die.

The terrorists differ from rape and assault criminals. The 'terrorists' are brainwashed and they feel they they are on a mission. They feel proud for their 'brave acts'. The rape and assault criminals are mentally deranged and cannot control their lust and passion. They can be cured by counseling and training.
