The Supreme Court today upheld the the Kerala government's liquor policy restricting sale of liquor to five-star hotels. The apex court dismissed a batch of petitions filed by hotel bars association challenging the new excise policy which prohibits the sale of liquor and three or four star hotels. The court said the bars that were closed down in the state will not be reopened. For reducing alcoholism in India, this verdict must be implemented throughout the country. Those who use it for medical purposes may be dispensed with the prescribed quantities by the doctors with proper accounts.

Drinking alcohol is not good for our health. People are affected by diseases because of the over use of alcohol. Large number of people in Kerala are addicted to alcohol. They are not bothered about their family. They spend large amount of money for drinking liquor and fail to fulfill the need of their family members. At last, when they fall in diseases, they need to spend huge amount for treatment. Some people sell their property for treatment and thus they become a homeless people. This is the reason why the government of Kerala took action to control alcoholism.

I uphold the Apex court decision to limit the sale of liquor to Five star Hotels in one way. Because all cannot afford to go to Five star hotels. But, if you see the Statistics, Kerala's share was 14.9 percent of the total  consumption of Liquor in the country. It means Kerala Alcohol consumers are consuming alcohol  worth Rs,30 crores per day.

Of course health of the consumer takes a big beat. Hence it is necessary Alcoholism has to be should be banned, except for Medical uses in the Country.

Alcohol has been there from time immemorial. Its consumption just can;t be eliminated. On TV we see leading stars promoting different brands under guise of CD's, books, soda etc when the logos are of liqour brands. The poorer sections of the society are hit the most as they spend a sizeable sum on it and thus dprive their families of basics esp food. Violence is also common among them esp the women get beaten. Unfortunately prohibition does not work. It is there since 1947 in Gujarat, but those interested know how to get it at a premium. Why SC has allowed liqour to be served in five star hotels is surprising. A ban should be for all. Kerala has the dubious record of maximum per capita consumption of alcohol. Building awareness and strong family values can perhaps help control its consumption.

Limiting sale of alcohol to 5 star hotel will not stop people to drink, the adverse effect will people start black marketing of acohol.

I agree with you. There are Arrack shops in every street corner. It's not sold in Black market. It's openly sold. And these Arrack shops provide place to drink along with the food.

It appears that limiting the sale of liquors in 5 star hotels, the Apex Court might have thought about the affordability too. Only riches would be able to have this addiction. Some controls will have to be there on the repeat visitors. Further, it depends upon the State Government how to implement this order so that none be able to sell the liquors otherwise. Those who are addicted would have to reconsider about their addiction for the sake of the welfare of their own as well as their dependents. If they do not do, law would take care for the social peace. We should not spare the rod to spoil the child.

An Alcoholic addict goes to the extent of taking loans and even sell the Mangal Sutra of his wife.I know many cases of Alcohol addicts dying a miserable death. We should not forget that liquor sales bring  quite a big chunk of revenue to the Government. That's why, Prohibition has become ineffective.

Well, restricting sale of liquor only to five star hotels would mean rise in production of illegal hooch which is far, far more dangerous than regular alcohol products sold in licensed shops. These illegal hooch liquor is made from really noxious and poisonous stuffs and kills hundreds, so many hooch tragedies have occurred through out the country. Prohibition increases attraction and also temptation, so instead of prohibiting it completely it should be sold legally in controlled conditions.

t is a classic case of protecting the interests of the rich and not sparing the rod for the poor. Do only rich have the right to drink and do associated activities. Either have full prohibition or no prohibition.

Every body has the right to drink. If They are  prepared to die
