Good oratory is, like Gulshan has said, a plus point. But to be a good leader one needs to have many other skills equally or more important than oratory, including having sincere compassion for people's issues. Although nowadays it has become trend to follow politicians who are able to make more noise and make bold, rash statements. Take Lalu Prasad for instance, he did hardly anything for Bihar, in fact ruined it like no other could have done and yet people thronged his meetings in a mad rush, all in a haste to hear him speak like a buffoon!

LOL, afterall that has happened , his prison sentence etc he continues to speak as if he is a messiah and seriously thinks he will become the PM one day ! Honestly if people like Lalu ,Mulayam and Maywati become PMs then what is left here ?

Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are two steps ahead !!!

Sadly, we have to see the things in real perspective. Lalus and Mayawatis are again going to come back to power and as you said we are left with a handful of ashes. Nothing more.

Fortunately for us, there are still enough people left in the country who recognise them for what they are and therefore these people remain restricted to their territories and not allow them to rule (read misrule) on the national front! Imagine if Mayawati came to power, all we would see everywhere is statues of elephants, Kanshiram and herself!

There are duvided opinions about this...If we go back in history we see not many powerful leaders were good oraters vice versa....Hitler was a good orater but his speeches were written for him apparently by Henrich Himmler...Our own leaders from all parties speak most of the time out of context brewing hate as can be seen...
So, is it enough to be a good speaker to become a leader ?

As for as myself is concerned, there is no necessity that good speaker is fit for a good leader. It would be better and an added advantage if a leader has good speaking/convincing skills.

Born to express, not to impress.

True. Many great leaders are not not good orators. Still they draw crowds. Late MGR is not a very good speaker. But he carries a personal charisma with him. His very presence makes the people run even from the remote villages to see him. Hitler stammers while speaking. But he's great crowd puller.About his leadership.world knows.

There are mixed opinions abt MGRs leadership qualities from what I have read , but he was no doubt an effective leader ...We cannot expect perfection since every individual has some drawback which gets highlighted when he or she is in a position of power..

A good leader just needs the capacity to lead. Oratory and communication skills are helpful but not the only attributes of a good leader. Leader is one who can lead people in right direction.
