Many villages especially those remote from cities are woman unfriendly. They want to confine women to home. Also, it appears that the village is Muslim dominated. They do not want more freedom to their women.

There are hundreds of such villages in UP, Hariyana where girls are not allowed to wear any other dresses but traditional and mobile phone is also not for them.

I think these types of issues arise in northern part of our country. In South India, We do not heave these type of issues. Women are allowed to use mobiles. They have given almost all the rights.

Actually these are the place where the light of education did not reach still now.

This is not due to lack of education, uneducated women do not need a mobile phone as much s educated ones but a certain community thinks that this can protect their college going girls from unwanted activities. Actually this is deep strategic thinking that can be known to locals only.

Both my maid and her hubby use phones. Both of them are uneducated. And so are many who use cell phones. Its all due to educated illeterates

To be very frank this is Muslim and jat communities who are forbidding their girls thinking that these steps would protect their girls from the unsocial activities, which are on the rise for well planned reasons.

I see. These things are quite strange here

Haven't you heard about Fatwas issued by different Panchayats in this particular area. These Fatwas come from both communities here who are in majority. The fines for breaking rules are to sever like Rs 1 lackh or out of community.

Why don't they lock up the girls instead! That will be the safest option.

Live in the present :)
I don't understand the mind of the villagers. When a women is kidnapped, she can be saved on time if she has a mobile phone. This is positive use of a mobile phone. Ban on use of mobiles for village women is not at all good.

This means you don't understand villagers. How was the woman kidnapped? This is because she moved out. The legendary character Seeta (Ramayana) also could be kidnapped because she crossed the line (Laxaman Rekha). Women should not cross their home boundary and they are safe. That is what villagers believe.

We need understand villagers' mindset. we cannot claim that a woman is safe outside home. But we need stress that she is as safe or unsafe as women outside home. we need not bother more about women's chastity. If we do not bother about male chastity, why bother about female?

In short, we need gender equality. This means that women are as safe as men and neither more nor less. If heavens do not fall if man loses chastity, why hue and cry on women's chastity or satitva. .

Rising of hue and cry when a woman loses chastity is due to lack of gender equality as you said and to that inherent hypocritic quality with which we are born with

And you'll be surprised to note the point that this is women themselves who make all the noise as if all hell broken loose. They never imagine that the victim could be their own sister or daughter.
