Now every state is asking for a split...Here in Karnatak there is demand for a seperate Coorg or Kodava land and also Tulunadu ...similarly all other states are coming up with their own demands but Gorkha land is unacceptable given the fact that they are nepalis wanting a state within ouyr country. The same thing may happen with bangladeshis who come sttealthily and settle here and who knows who else?

They are not Nepalis. every Gurkha is not a Nepali. Gurkha is a race and not nationality. It is significant that Gorkha autonomous region is already there in West Bengal. This is itself anomalous Why should there be an autonomous are within a state. This means state within state. The more logic option is to recognize the region as separate state within Union of India. The only other autonomous region within a state is Ladakh. But that is acceptable owing to special status of Jammu & Kashmir. west Bengal does not have special status like J & K and hence there is no justification for 'Gorkha autonomous region' within West Bengal In all fairness, Gorkhaland should be an independent state in Union of India. .

First you are wrong conceptually in the description of any state as 'independent', secondly, you are once again wrong in interpreting acceptance and existence of a council in a state as a state within a state. There are many such councils which came into being as a result of tripartite arrangement , for instance, Bodoland Territorial Council, Karbi Anglong Autonmous Council and others. You are funnily mum on their demands and seem to be more Gorkha than a Gorkha in demanding Gorkhaland :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Recognizing certain areas as separate entity as tripartite agreement or otherwise obviously gives some justification for separate state or union territory. Thank you for mentioning some areas in Assam and elsewhere like Bodoland that are territorial council or something similar. Full statehood is logical end of such recognition within a state. If Gorkhaland concept is totally unjustified, there would be no acceptance of their autonomy even within West Bengal. Now when there is such demand, all concerned should properly enter in discussion instead of making it a prestige issue and create acrimony. I may be wrong on some factual and legal issues involved as I neither claim to be infallible nor an expert in constitutional law.

As you have rightly emphasized that the issue is too important to be decided on ego or prestige but on a broader consensus on some pragmatic aspects. That is the reason I mentioned in one of my earlier posts that given to sensitivity based on geo-political considerations, there could be a solution in giving it a 'Union Territory' status if Gorkhas are so unhappy being a part of West Bengal. But never for a moment indulge in thoughts that Bimal Gurung and his associates who are responsible for the brutal murder in broad day light of Madan Tamang and senseless destruction of public properties would ever grow into mature leaders to serve the cause of Gorkhas. They should be dealt with an iron hand and put in their right places - jails!!! Lumpen elements are always selfish. They just exploit base sentiments of commoners to become leaders to ditch their very followers at the first available opportunity. Shubhas Ghising did it and Bimal Gurung is trying to follow in his footsteps.

Result of making separate state on the basis of language of religion will not proved good for India. Once it was demand by some peoples that Jammy seaprated for Kashmir because majority of Hindus in Jammu, but government denied it. Think for a moment what happen if Jammu was separated form Kashmir. Pakistan will claim strongly that citizens of Kasmir are Muslim so it is part of Pakistan.

That will save us from lot of problems we are facing today. If they want to go with Pakistan on the basis of religion, the eyes of secularists will open allover the world.

I feel that once a separate state or Union Territory for the Gorkha area is accepted, he Gorkha league leaders would lose their importance. This is simlar to Jharkhand. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha of Shibu Soren had fought for separate Jharkhand state but after fulfillment of object, they are not so significant. They are just equal or less than BJP, Congress and others. They do not have that importance as they enjoyed before formation of Jharkhand state. Another example is Uttarakhand. There the Uttarakhand Party that fought for separate is no more relevant.

Disintegration of a country into too many small states is not a healthy tendency since it would be very difficult for the Center to rule and politically it can cause too many complications.Once the center gives in to one demand several others are bound to follow and all of them may have no validity.

Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are two steps ahead !!!

I think demand of separate Gorkhaland is not in line with jharkhand or Uttarakhand because people demanding a separate state in this case do not belong to our country. Besides we cannot go on dividing states to pacify warring leaders. If we must divide a state it can only be on geographical based differences or distances. To deprive importance or reducing significance of a leader shouting illegally, he should know where the gate of nearest jail is, he belongs to that particular building only.
