Well, Linux is surely virus free in compare of windows.. So its cool.

Only windows OS is the worse in handling those viruses.
Linux is not entirely free from viruses, there are some, Window is popular and layman can use it with its GUI and that is why viruses are there. Linux meant for professionals.

I don't know much of this jargon about OS. But I can say this much that the free anti virus loaded by my net connection provider 3 years ago is working excellently .its Avira.
Avira AV is good but it is adware as from time to time advertisement of its own product will be shown on or before updating of its definitions.

I never got such advertisements.

You are lucky then or else they do it on daily basis first and if you don't listen to them they do it hourly.

Perhaps I'm lucky, because really I never got such advertisements or alerts on renewals. Whenever I go for a potentially virus infested site. I get an immediate warning.

You are really lucky, but beware- if they remember your registration sometimes in future, your computer will go crazy and behave like a spoilt brat first then it will slow down painfully and one day you will find it boot with lot of trouble. Maybe you will get warnings of your firewall turned off and so on and so forth. Cheers.

Should I talk with my service provider, who installed it 3 years ago? I think I should buy a new antivirus programme.

No need, if you ever get a reminder, simply buy the primary version, it is not a costly affair but it will make things right. But wait until they remind you.
One can ignore warnings and continue to use its free version. There are workarounds in the registry from where these advertisement would not appear. A simple Google search can give one plenty of links to remove ads.

I have been using Windows since 1998. Earlier when I wasn't using anti-virus as there wasn't net connection, there were viruses, but I was successful in removing them. However, even with continued Windows usage, there is no problem for me at all.
Windows without any security suit, must be brave enough or must be using standard user account or some sort of virtual environment otherwise virus could crip into your system.

Yes, I have been using anti-virus from day one. Never has my laptop been without prorection for even a single second. And as I have bought the software, I also get regular updates. So, I don't see any problem in continuing to use it.

I am also using XP on my old laptop and Windows 7 Home Basic on the new one. I have MS's anti-virus that I got free with the device. And I get regular updates as well, as if I have bought the AV. So, things are fine for me at the moment.

No one is talking about NPAV. I am using it. I think we who are using loptop or PC for professional purpose so we should be have an effective AV. some time we also down load some programs and programs may be infected with virus.

Abhi.. Even I am using windows and not facing any problem. Actually windows is most user friendly in compare to others.

@Mohan.. You are correct. Linux is not completely virus free. It is less popular so it is surely catching less attention of hackers. In windows OS it is totally reverse case. That is normal thing.. Good and bad both things may attract towards best thing..

My net service provider also is of the opinion that I should wait for a reminder

Most of virus writers use Linux to write virus for Windows, as they work in virtualized environment, and apart from this Linux is not popular, Windows and now Mac also have viruses.

Best of the Firewalls and anti virus programmes cannot stop this ever spreading epidemic known as VIRUS. As the protections are growing so are the Viruses.

With the latest versions of windows that is Windows 8 plus some other specific internet precautions such as using standard account, using updated web browser, good internet practices, and safe search can save you from BSOD.
