If Bhagdad falls Iraq may be divided into three parts - some areas going to Kurds,some going to Syria and rest a small Iraq or joining Shia Iran. The Americans may not want this to happen so they will finish the militants temporarily but not permanently. The ISIS militants are supposed to be 20000 or so in numbers but are being backed by tSaudi Arabia, Qatar etc Sunni countries, who do not like Shia Iran's rise as a power in Gulf. So the battle may be long drawn.

If the battle prolongs, it will have adverse effects on India too.i wonder what would be the fate of 40 kidnapped Indians and the nurses who were trapped in their hospitals.

That is a new point to me, and this means one more Afghanistan in the making, I think most of these reasons are unstable because of natural gas and all these wars are fought beacuse of this.
