It was known as Madarasapattinam/Madhurasapattinam even before any European came to India. It was derived from a local Fisherman's name 'Madarasan' or 'Madhurasan' which means Sweet (Honey) King ("Madhu" + "rasan") in Tamil. Note the name Madurai also has Madhu (Sweet) in it.
Notably the name Chennai is derived from the Telugu person's name "Chennappa Naicker".
The Britishers only shortened Madarasapattinam/Madhurasapattinam to Madras like they shortened Chennapattinam to Chennai.
Its really funny to think that the Government of Tamil Nadu has changed from a Tamil name to a Telugu name and made the older one Foreign. It made Madras appear foriegn and made the telugu name Chennai a tamil name. Intelligent politics but poor welfare.
