In functions jasmine plays a vital role than other flowers.

In our areas this is Mari gold (Genda) or roses are the main flowers, Jasmine, tuberose, magnolia , mogra are other popular varieties for the function purposes.

For worships nerium and thulsi garlands are most popular. Also, marigold, jasmine and chrysanthemom.

Robert ..do you know 'Kozhunnu?'......it's green colour, a bunch...but its smell...so sweet......usually available in festivals

We call in Nandhyaar vattam.....having single layer petals and multilayer. Since Nandhya resembles Sandhya a lot and I used to wear it regularly during my primary school days.....friends used to call me Nandhya Rani ;) :laugh: :laugh:

Does it have sweet smell? We also offer similar flower to God. It has sweet smell and we call it kaboklei

Jabeen what you are referring to is a similar looking flower with very heady fragrance , we call it cup and saucer flower...is that right? It is lovely and grows into a huge bush...

This cup and saucer am seeing for first time..
Nandyar vattam, it has a sweet smell. Also, it's a medicinal flower.
Its extract is a very good medicine for eye diseases.....we call it Chenkannu(Red eye disease). Our eyes will be red, irritating and painful too.....
Usually, single layered Nandyarvattam is used as medicine for eyes...exactly the same given in Ushaji's first picture

Usha that's right! Jabeen, the first image is the flower we call as 'Tagar' and it has no fragrance. While the one that Usha has posted is the Gardenia flower, it has a very sweet and heady fragrance, in Marathi we call it as 'Anant'.

But it has a smell Kalyani, though not intense.
But if it's layered, it holds a little more smell. Now those multilayered Nandarvattams not seen anywhere

Yes that's right kalyani, we call it Ananta pushpa :) and there are two varieties in that too, one has smaller leaves and the flowers are a pale cream/white in color whereas the larger variety is pure brilliant white and has a lovely fragrance

Yes Nandi flower is used in many ayurvedic medications and is supposed to be very good for the eyes. In fact in many houses at my place kajal is made using this flower since it is supposed to be cooling for the eyes...
