According to news snippets Nasik onion mandi is receiving huge money by creating artificial shortages and then after price hike, sending large number of onions into market, all these mandi are controlled by an influential politician.

There is nothing new, politicians never miss a chance to make money and use farmers as their vote banks. besides traders have to part with their profit for election funds. sugar lobby is another one that will show its colors from next month onward when crushing begins.

A sad state of affairs, beneficiaries are trying hard to get money from the hard earned money from common man and now it is necessary to build one such onion stock exchange to control its price mechanisms.

We do not need any stock exchanges separately but a strict regulatory that keeps a stricter control on such extra ordinary situations.

Onions are not in the list of essential commodities. So no check on hoarders. Consequently the price rise. Rumor of its price touching Rs. 100/- The media has highlighted this too much. For Delhites- particularly Punjabis, without onions, there is no life. Personally, I don't see why onions are so significant. If you do not eat or curtail eating onions, the hoarders. game will be defeated.
In today's, local Agra newspaper, there is happy news of the onion prices coming down.

Or if Indian government allows import, it will show its impact immediately. It's way too cheaper in other countries.

I read in evening news paper, government is importing onion from Pakistan. 12 trucks reach by road from Lahore. But it is not enough.

12 trucks are not enough even for on city for a week, they will have to go for bigger consignments. This should be on priorities basis.

It seems onions are going to decide the fate of our economy, not gold.

Onions are a food item and hence essential. Gold is for ornaments and hence non essential. People lived in prehistoric period without gold but not without food.

Agreed. Gold was mere status symbol right from the Vedic period. Never it was considered as an indispensable thing.

Thank god that there is rice to eat at least. Rice fills the stomach. Onions are just a side dish which can be ignored.
