A grim tragedy involving a family in Kolkata took place a few days back which has completely baffled psychologists, sociologists and all. Three members of a family consisting of two unmarried women aged around 50 who were sisters and their mother aged above 80 took the most horrible method of killing themselves by jumping from the roof of one of the tallest housing complexes in Kolkata within hours of performing their father's last rites who was above 90! The family belonged to a middle class and left behind properties worth more than a crore with a will intending to hand them over to Rabindra Bharati University. The elder of the sisters was quite a prominent environmental and social activist raising her voice against illegal filling of water bodies and disapperance of greenery in the city. What a terrible end!

This is indeed very horrible. Nobody knows what goes on in mind and what this may lead to.

It is indeed terribly sad to read about such tragedies.I have seen this happen in many cases.Unless an individual gets totally adjusted to his/her ;life and is secure one can easily become disillusioned and slip into life long depression.
There are so many cases of prominent models and actresses who wasted their lives away like for eg :- Meena Kumari, Geeta Dutt, who took resort to drinks and drugs respectively .This was again because of their personal tragedies.Recently I remember reading about a couple of prominent models who commited suicide because of some such reason, personal grief !

Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are two steps ahead !!!

Best example is Smitha who committed suicide years before...on which film dirty picture was made

Meera sandhu
Women just fear of the society ,their culture and could not express their feeling to others and as such they fall under depression.

This incident is very unique in the sense that it was a collective and collaborative act of suicide. All you cited are instances of individual cases. It does broadly indicate that there is something wrong with our society overly burdened with unrealistic aspirations and goals and claiming even an entire family!

Yes thats true, hers was a sad story ,typical of too much success and too soon which led to many other events that led to the final tragedy. She was apparently very depressed and had many mood fluctuations for almost a couple of years before she died ..

Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are two steps ahead !!!

Not just unrealistic aspirations and goals, also the pressures of the society which is very repressive where women are concerned .Women are not treated at par with men even today except in certain places only or when they have had the guts to overcome all obstacles and reach the top....but in a middle class set up this never happens, she has to toe the line and it seems like a burden !

Today I read a report on the eldest sister and I feel just amazed at how a woman who fought so bravely against realtors and builders as narrated by one of the former judges of Calcutta High Court, could even think of committing suicide along with other members of her family in such bizarre manner!

This is very right. The issue with most people is that they are too enthusiastic about positive results of their efforts. They just forget that nobody works in a vacuum. We are social products. we work in an interactive manner. Even if you work hardest and most sincerely, there is no guarantee of success because results do not depend on you alone.

In this connection, the teaching on 'karma' by Lord Krishna in Bhagwad Geetha may be of help to fight depression. You can control your acts but not results.
